He received his education at the Conservatorio “Alfredo Casella” in L'Aquila, the Eesti Muusikaakadeemia in Tallinn and the “Liszt Ferenc Academy of Music in Budapest. He studied with musicians such as Balazs Szokolay, François-Joel Thiollier, Aldo Ciccolini, Ferenc Rados, Angela Hewitt, to mention a few. Eclectic musician, he has always turned his attention to a vast repertoire ranging from the music of Scarlatti and Bach to modern and contemporary composers. Piano works have been dedicated to him and there are numerous first absolute performances by living composers. Parallel to his solo activity he carries out an intense chamber music activity; significant in this sense are the collaborations with musicians such as Alessandro Carbonare, Gabriele Geminiani, Matteo Liuzzi, Sidney Corbett, Theodora Geraets, Zvi Carmeli, Matias De Oliveira Pinto, Alessio Elia, Michael Riessler, Francesco Dillon, Liliana Bernardi, Aida Carmen Soanea, Romain Garioud, the Ensemble Modern in Frankfurt, the Dutch NSO orchestra, to name a few. 

He dedicates himself with great passion to teaching; for several years he has been organizing and collaborating in courses of piano interpretation and chamber music. He is the founder and artistic director of the international summer academy "Ambientazioni Musicali" which for four years has been offering specialization summer courses with high-profile teachers in various locations of the central Italy. 

He has been piano professor in pre-academic courses at the Conservatorio “santa Cecilia” in Roma. Actually Massimiliano is a free-lance piano teacher, performer and accompanist for singers and instrumentalists in various festivals and masterclasses.
